Last year I presented a plan to improve road maintenance by recycling tire aggregate and this year I am researching ways to reduce food waste in our schools as well as how to implement 3D printed housing policies. I’ve won various awards for my research on algae bioplastic and materials science including the RICOH Sustainable Development Award, Junior Stockholm Water Prize, and category awards in the Palos Verdes Science and Engineering Fair. In my spare time you can find me curled up in a corner with my tortilla blanket rereading Scythe or exploring nature and giving tours at the PV Interpretive Center.

Hello! My name is Reina Jo, and I’m currently a junior at Chadwick School. Both inside and outside of school, I take any opportunity I find to pursue my passions in sustainability and social justice. Regarding my sustainability work, outside of SEA, I am a part of the high school Sustainability Council, am a founder and leader of the Sustainable Clothing Club, and am organizing a workshop on the intersectionality of environmentalism and social justice. Last year, I conducted research and presented to local city councils to encourage the implementation of native plants as both a green and economical initiative. This year, my focus has shifted to reviewing building codes to eventually propose standards that are friendly 3-D printed houses. I am also dedicated to the anti-Asian hate cause and run an instagram centered around raising awareness about issues that concern Asian American youth (@aaaforyouth!). My ultimate goal is to improve the experiences of those around me in the younger and future generations, and as a member of my school’s Academic Council, Student Wellness Leadership, Student Council, Peer Mentors program, and Study Buddies program, I actively make an effort to leave a positive impact on my community. When I am not spending my time on SEA and these other initiatives, I enjoy listening to music, reading, and spending time with friends.

Hai! My name is Ryan, a sophomore at Vistamar High School. Founder and leader of the Environmental Committee at my school, we look for ways to educate environmental justice and raise awareness on the importance of plastic conservancy. Outside of SEA, I run my own passion project called Story of Our Surroundings. The focus of the organization is to tie the importance of sustainability awareness in underrepresented communities and educate the youth with environmental problems occurring around the world. In addition, my work with the environment ties with my leadership for the United Association Club at my school. Currently part of the Diversity Alliance Council at school, we promote more inclusivity and equity for students and staff around the school and coordinate inclusivity workshops at my school's Identity Day every year. Last year, I focused on initiating rubberized asphalt roads in replacement of concrete roads in the area, to promote environmental sustainability. In my free time, I love to play volleyball, listen to music, and hang with family and friends. I wish to see the world in a better, healthier state!

I have been in SEA since 2020 and last year I presented a plan to convert grassy areas in parks and such to host native plants and helped with the planning to improve read maintenance by recycling tire aggregate. This year I am working on SEA to help reduce the amount of Particulate Air we inhale in PV. I founded Sunshine's predecessor, Choose Hugs, in April 2019 as a Non-Profit Organization after successfully completing Young Entrepreneur Academy. As an accomplished speaker from age 14, I have had public speaking engagements with adult troop leaders, investors, girl scouts and special needs kids. I have introduced new strategies to my non-profit like to reach a wider audience to achieve positive impact in the following areas: nature preservation, love of the environment, and environmental mindfulness.

Hi! My name is Aila Shibao, and I’m a junior at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. I’m graduating this year and am planning to pursue chemistry to learn about how it can be used to mediate the environmental issues we face today. At school, I participate in many science-related extracurriculars, and I run a club that creates fleece blankets to donate to children in hospitals. Outside of school though, I love trying new restaurants and finding new songs on Spotify to listen to.
